Is ransomware the coronavirus of the cyber world?

The coronavirus is an epidemic in the world today. Ransomware is an epidemic in the cyber world today.

We are told that, if we start using better personal hygiene — like washing our hands — we can help minimize the risk of the nasty coronavirus. If nothing else positive comes from this epidemic, hopefully, the world will at least adopt some better personal hygiene practices.

In the cyber world, we know that, while not all ransomware attacks can be prevented with basic cyber hygiene, the disastrous effects of the vast majority of them could have been avoided with basic cyber hygiene, such as the 19 tips on this Good Cyber Hygiene Checklist.

Maybe, just maybe, if nothing else positive comes from the public attention the ransomware epidemic is receiving, will it lead to the adoption of better cyber hygiene practices?
